If a toll due (Article 176(11) of the Italian Highway Code) is not paid, in whole or in part, an unpaid toll ticket (transit certificate/receipt) is issued. This ticket shows the ticket number, vehicle data (licence plate and class), transit data (date, time, exit tollbooth and entry tollbooth, where available), and the amount to be paid, along with the payment methods available.

Late payment reminder letters (formal notices) are notices sent to the address of the vehicle owner, as resulting from registration under the Italian Vehicle Registration Agency, for which an unpaid toll ticket has been issued and has not been settled within 15 days after transit. The amount to be paid includes the toll amount (unchanged) plus the assessment charges, as provided for in Article 176(11-bis) of the Italian Highway Code.

An unpaid toll ticket can be paid without further fees within 15 days from the date of issue. After this period, the amount will be increased by the administration fees (Article 176(11-bis), Italian Highway Code). Failure to pay the amount due will result in the enforced recovery of the debt, with consequent increase in the costs to be borne by the debtor (Article 373, Italian Highway Code). Moreover, the documentation proving the failure to pay may be forwarded to the Traffic Police for consequent imposition of the administrative fees set out in Article 176(21) of the Italian Highway Code, which provides for a surcharge between € 87.00 and € 344.00 and 2 penalty points on the driving licence of the actual offender, as well as Article 176(17) of the Italian Highway Code, which provides for a surcharge between € 430.00 and € 1,731.00.

To ensure that tolls are charged correctly, it is essential that the vehicle's licence plate is always up-to-date in the electronic toll collection contract. In the event of a toll collection device or tollbooth malfunction, the system reads the licence plate via camera, and if the “new licence plate” does not match the device, the amount cannot be charged on the vehicle owner’s device. For further info on how to update your data, contact the electronic toll collection contract operator.
