FAQ
A. What is the service and which journeys does it cover?
Until 31 May 2026
The Cashback service allows you to claim a refund on tolls for delays due to planned roadworks along the Autostrade per l’Italia network. After the eligibility requirements set out below have been verified, the refund is issued by Autostrade per l’Italia. It is available for all customers and all payment methods.
From 1 June 2026
The Cashback scheme allows you to claim a refund on tolls for delays caused by roadworks, roadworks under certain conditions, or traffic congestion on the network managed by Autostrade per l’Italia and the Group’s participating concessionaires (RAV - Raccordo autostradale Valle d’Aosta, SAT – Società Motorway Tirrenica and TANA – Tangenziale di Napoli). The refund is issued by Autostrade per l’Italia, acting in its own name for the network under its jurisdiction and on behalf of the participating Group concessionaires. It is available for all customers and all payment methods.
Until 31 May 2026
The service is free of charge and is available to natural and legal persons (companies and VAT-registered businesses) who have paid the toll, provided they have registered on the Muovy Cashback app or the Cashback portal on the www.autostrade.it website, and accepted the Terms and Conditions. It is available for all payment methods.
From 1 June 2026
The service is free of charge and is available to natural and legal persons (companies and VAT-registered businesses) who have paid the toll. In addition to registered users, the service is also available to non-registered users, who can access it by presenting their toll payment receipt or transit certificate without needing to create an account. It is available for all payment methods.
Until 31 May 2026
Anyone who has travelled on the network operated by Autostrade per l’Italia and: (1) has experienced a delay caused by roadworks that reduce the number of lanes originally available (excluding the hard shoulder); (2) is in possession of a payment receipt, has registered their number plate or subscribed to an electronic toll collection service, and is up to date with the relevant payments.
From 1 June 2026
Anyone who has travelled on the Autostrade per l’Italia network or on the networks of participating Group concessionaires and has encountered:
- roadworks - in this case, the journey is eligible for a refund only if the entry and exit points are entirely within the network of a single participating concessionaire, with no inter-connection with other concessionaires;
- a delay caused by traffic congestion - in this case, it is sufficient for the section affected by traffic congestion to be managed by a participating concessionaire, regardless of the journey's entry and exit toll booths.
The requirements regarding the claim (receipt, number plate or electronic toll collection payment) remain in force, and you must be up to date with the relevant payments.
Note - Refunds cannot be claimed against an Unpaid Toll Report.
Until 31 May 2026
Travel on sections of the network operated by Autostrade per l’Italia affected by delays caused by construction sites for scheduled works is eligible to a refund.
From 1 June 2026
Journeys made on sections covered by the service (the Autostrade per l’Italia network or those of participating Group concessionaires) that are affected by roadworks or traffic congestion are eligible for a refund. In the case of roadworks, it is also necessary for the journey to start and end entirely within the network of a single participating concessionaire, without crossing into the networks of other concessionaires. For traffic congestion episodes, however, it is sufficient for the section affected to be covered by the service (see the question on journeys crossing multiple concessionaires).

Until 31 May 2026
Yes, limited to the part of the toll payable to Autostrade per l’Italia. If the journey passes through sections managed by other concessionaires, the refund is calculated only considering the part of the toll relating to the Autostrade per l’Italia network.
From 1 June 2026
It depends on the reason for the refund:
- Delays due to roadworks - No. Only journeys that start and end entirely within the network of a single participating concessionaire, without passing through sections operated by other concessionaires, are eligible for refunds. If you enter or exit a motorway operated by a different concessionaire, the entire journey is non-refundable, even if both concessionaires belong to the Autostrade per l’Italia Group.
- Traffic congestion events - Yes, it is possible. It is sufficient for the section affected by the congestion to be covered by the service, regardless of the entry and exit toll booths.
Comparative example - Milano Est → Verona Sud (158 km, Class A).
This is a journey on the A4 motorway that starts at an Autostrade per l’Italia toll booth (Milano Est) and ends on a section managed by another concessionaire (Verona Sud).
Until 31 May 2026: eligible. The refund is calculated solely considering the part of the toll payable to Autostrade per l’Italia (for example, €6.71 out of a total of €11.10).
From 1 June 2026: not eligible for delays due to roadworks. As the departure and arrival points are not on the same network, the journey is not eligible for refunds due to roadworks. However, should traffic congestion occur on the section managed by Autostrade per l’Italia, a refund would still be possible as, in that case, an internal origin-destination is not required.
in accordance with Measure 8 of Resolution ART 132/2024 - Consolidated Act and related Annex A/1.
In both periods, roadworks carried out as part of scheduled maintenance that reduce the number of lanes originally available (excluding the hard shoulder) and affect traffic flow are eligible for refunds, including those identified in specific orders.
Note - This does not include roadworks for urgent safety repairs, such as those resulting from accidents.
Until 31 May 2026
Delays caused by heavy traffic, accidents, adverse weather conditions, public events or any other reason other than scheduled roadworks do not entitle you to a refund.
From 1 June 2026
The service only refunds delays caused by scheduled roadworks or traffic congestion. This therefore excludes disruptions caused by weather conditions, heavy traffic and other events not falling into these categories.
From 1 June 2026
It is a disruption to traffic flow that is causing congestion on the section travelled. You are only entitled to a refund if the individual episode lasts 60 minutes or more. Episodes of a shorter duration are not eligible for a refund and cannot be combined. In other words, it is a force majeure event that brings traffic to a standstill, making it impossible for any vehicles to pass through. These types of episodes are identified as such by the relevant authorities and promptly reported on the www.autostrade.it website, the Autostrade per l’Italia App and on variable message signs (VMS).
Note - This category of episode was introduced on 1 June 2026: under the previous regulations, only delays caused by roadworks were eligible for a refund.
Until 31 May 2026
Yes, but only for tolls relating to the section of the journey managed by Autostrade per l’Italia.
From 1 June 2026
It depends on the reason for the refund. If the delay is due to roadworks, no: only journeys that start and end entirely on the network of the same participating concessionaire are eligible for refunds. Therefore, if you enter or exit a motorway managed by another concessionaire, the entire journey is not eligible. If, however, the delay is caused by traffic congestion, then yes: it is sufficient for the section affected to be covered by the service, regardless of the entry and exit toll booths.
From 1 June 2026
No. As of 1 June 2026, the "Cashback Liguria" and "Cashback A26" special services are no longer available. The standard refund policy described in these FAQs and in the Terms and Conditions of Service applies.
B. How refunds are calculated
Until 31 May 2026
Refunds are a percentage of the toll payable to Autostrade per l’Italia, calculated by cross-referencing the significant delay (in minutes) with the journey length (in km), based on the following table:
| Significant delay | 0-29 km | 30-49 km | 50-99 km | 100-149 km | 150-249 km | 250-349 km | 350-499 km | 500+ km |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10-14 min | 75% | 50% | 25% | — | — | — | — | — |
| 15-29 min | 100% | 75% | 50% | 25% | 20% | 15% | 10% | 5% |
| 30-44 min | 100% | 100% | 75% | 50% | 25% | 20% | 15% | 10% |
| 45-59 min | 100% | 100% | 100% | 75% | 50% | 25% | 20% | 15% |
| 60-89 min | 100% | 100% | 100% | 100% | 75% | 50% | 25% | 20% |
| 90-119 min | 100% | 100% | 100% | 100% | 100% | 75% | 50% | 25% |
| ≥ 120 min | 100% | 100% | 100% | 100% | 100% | 100% | 75% | 50% |
A delay of less than 10 minutes does not entitle you to a refund, regardless of the length of the journey. Boxes marked with a dash indicate combinations that are not eligible for a refund.
From 1 June 2026
The calculation no longer uses fixed percentage brackets and depends on the type of episode.
Delays due to roadworks. The amount is made up of two components: one based on the nature of the roadworks (number of lanes closed, length of the stretch and other technical parameters) and one based on the delay the roadworks cause to your journey compared to the standard journey time. This refund is only activated once these minimum thresholds are reached:
| Journey length | Minimum threshold |
|---|---|
| Up to 30 km | Always in case of roadworks, regardless of any delays |
| 30 to 50 km | Delay caused by roadworks ≥ 10 minutes |
| Over 50 km | Delay caused by roadworks ≥ 15 minutes |
Delay caused by traffic congestion. The refund is a fixed percentage of the toll paid, based solely on the duration of the event (the length of the journey is irrelevant):
| Duration of the traffic congestion | Toll refund |
|---|---|
| Less than 60 minutes | No refund |
| 60 to 119 minutes | 50% |
| 120 to 179 minutes | 75% |
| From 180 minutes onwards | 100% |
In case of several traffic congestion episodes affecting a same journey, refund are calculated by summing up those individually exceeding 60 minutes, up to a maximum of 100% of the toll.
The calculation is carried out in accordance with Measure 8 of Resolution ART 132/2024 - Consolidated Text and the relevant Annex A/1.
Until 31 May 2026
It is the lower value between the actual journey delay (compared to the reference time) and the delay caused by roadworks, as recorded by the Autostrade per l’Italia systems. For non-closed-system sections, given their specific nature, only the estimated roadworks-related delay across the entire section is taken into account.
From 1 June 2026
This is the difference between the actual average journey time and the reference time, calculated in accordance with the new method set out in Annex A/1 to Measure 8 of ART Resolution 132/2024 - Consolidated Text.
It is the time taken to complete the journey, calculated as the ratio of the distance travelled to the average speed. This is the measure used to gauge the journey's delay.
From 1 June 2026
If roadworks and traffic congestion occur at the same time during a same journey, the two amounts are not added together: the higher of the two reimbursements is paid.
Yes, there are two thresholds:
- Refund threshold (€0.10): Individual claims with a calculated amount of less than €0.10 are not eligible for a refund and do not count towards the cumulative total for journeys made from 1 June 2026.
- Payout threshold (€1): Amounts of €0.10 or more are accumulated and paid out once the total reaches €1.
C. How to claim a refund
Until 31 May 2026
Download the Muovy Cashback app and sign up in the dedicated section, or register via the Cashback portal on the www.autostrade.it website, following the instructions provided.
From 1 June 2026
You can sign up as before via the app or on the Cashback portal at www.autostrade.it. Furthermore, only for claims made using a payment receipt, you can access the service without registering via the "Scan a receipt" function on the Cashback homepage.
Until 31 May 2026
Yes, to use the Cashback service, you need to create an account on the App or on the Cashback portal at www.autostrade.it.
From 1 June 2026
Not always. If you are claiming a refund using a payment receipt, you can do so even as a non-registered user, without creating an account. However, you will need to create an account to use the electronic toll collection payment and number plate options, as well as to access your wallet and refund history.
No, registration is completely free of charge.
There are three options, each with its own rules:
- Electronic toll collection system - via a device (OBU/PAN) registered to the account. For registered users only.
- Number plate - via automatic number plate recognition at toll booths, subject to the vehicle being registered. Only for registered users and Italian number plates.
- Payment receipt/transit certificate - by taking a photo of the receipt issued at the toll booth. Available to registered users, and to non-registered users as of 1 June 2026. Only one refund is permitted per receipt, and it will be granted to the first person claiming it. You can request a replacement receipt from Autostrade per l’Italia via the following link: https://servizialcliente.autostrade.it/s/webform/ricevuta-pedaggio-sostitutiva
Note - The electronic toll collection system and number plate recognition options are available to registered users during both periods. The option to use a receipt without being registered will be introduced on 1 June 2026.
As of 1 June 2026, there will no longer be a dedicated process for consortia. Individual road haulage companies may register for the service using the procedures set out in these FAQs in order to continue using the service as normal.
Sign up to the Muovy Cashback app or the Cashback portal by entering your device code (OBU or PAN) and verify your identity by uploading a document. You will receive an automatic notification for refundable journeys made after registration.
Go to the Profile section › My devices › Add new device, either in the Muovy Cashback app or on the Cashback portal. To enter your device details, you will be asked to take a photo of or upload the invoice from your electronic toll collection operator. Once you have added the device and completed the verification process, you will automatically see all the journeys made on the network covered by the service, with those for which you are entitled to a refund highlighted.
You can register up to 10 electronic toll collection devices, depending on the number made available by your operator. Please contact the Customer Care service should you wish to add more.
The code of electronic toll collection devices (OBU or PAN) can be found on the invoice sent by the electronic toll collection operator.
Yes, as an electronic toll collection customer, you can register and also use the Number Plate option. Please note that the Cashback service for the Number Plate option is only valid for journeys paid for by Cash or Card.
If you're paying by cash or card, you have two options: you can either register your number plate (in which case you'll receive automatic refunds for journeys made after registering), or you can send a photo of the payment receipt collected at the exit toll booth for each journey. It is always advisable to keep the receipt even if you decide to register your number plate, in case it is not recognised by the cameras.
Yes, tolls paid in cash are valid for Cashback purposes. You can get an automatic refund whenever you are entitled to it by registering your number plate (only for journeys made after the registration), or you can make a claim for each individual journey by collecting your payment receipt at the exit toll booth and uploading it to the Muovy Cashback App or the Cashback Portal. The refundable amount is calculated automatically once the claim has been made. It is however advisable to collect and keep the receipt even if you decide to register your number plate, in case it is not recognised by the cameras.
Yes, tolls paid by ViaCard are valid for Cashback purposes. You can get an automatic refund whenever you are entitled to it by registering your licence plate (only trips after registration are refundable), or you can make a claim for each individual journey by collecting your receipt at the exit tollbooth and uploading it to the Muovy Cashback App or the Cashback Portal. The refundable amount is calculated automatically once the claim has been made. It is however advisable to collect and keep the receipt even if you decide to register your number plate, in case it is not recognised by the cameras.
The Number Plate option is available to vehicles with Italian number plates that are registered in the account holder's name or assigned to them (including company cars, long-term rental vehicles and leased vehicles). You cannot register vehicles owned by relatives or friends. The "Number Plate" option is not available for vehicles with foreign number plates: you can, however, request a refund using the "Receipt" option.
D. Payment and wallet
Until 31 May 2026
Outcomes are communicated within a maximum of 7 days from the date the receipt is sent (receipt option), within 3 days of the date of travel (number plate option) and within a maximum of 20 days of the date of travel (electronic toll collection option).
From 1 June 2026
The outcome depends on the claim method:
- Receipt and number plate: within 7 days.
- Electronic toll collection system: the outcome depends on the billing cycle, i.e. the time required to process the journeys.
Until 31 May 2026
The wallet accumulates the refunds accrued over four periods (1 January - 31 March, 1 April - 30 June, 1 July - 30 September, 1 October - 31 December). Refunds accrued during each period are paid via wire transfer, typically within 30 days of the end of the accrual period.
From 1 June 2026
The quarterly cycle has been abolished. The wallet accumulates the refunds approved, and the transfer is made automatically to the bank account specified as soon as the balance reaches or exceeds €1, without you needing to do anything.
Note - For non-registered users, the wallet is linked to the "email + IBAN" combination: requests sent from the same email address but with different IBANs are accumulated in separate wallets.
Refunds are paid via wire bank transfer to the bank account specified. The IBAN must be from the SEPA area.
E. Profile Management, Deadlines and Troubleshooting
A Profile is the section of the Muovy Cashback app and the Cashback portal on the www.autostrade.it website where you can manage your personal details, devices, vehicles and IBAN.
You can choose a new password by clicking on "Forgot your password?" and entering your account email address. You will receive an email with the instructions. The link is valid for 24 hours and can only be used once.
To continue receiving your refunds, update your details in the Profile section of the app or of the Cashback portal.
From 1 June 2026
Once you have submitted your claim, you will receive a 36-character alphanumeric code via email. To check the status of your claim, enter the code in the "Have you already made a claim?" section in the app or on the www.autostrade.it website. To avoid making mistakes, we recommend copying and pasting the code from the email. You will also receive email updates on the key stages of the process.
The timeframe within which a journey that has already taken place can still be refunded depends on how the claim is made:
- Payment receipt/transit certificate: within 12 months of the date of the request (Validity Period).
- Electronic toll collection system: up to 4 months before the date the service is activated.
- Number plate: not retroactive. It applies from the date the option is activated.
Note - The retroactive period does not alter the calculation method applied, which remains determined by the date of the journey: journeys made on or before 31 May 2026 are subject to the previous regulations, and those made on or after 1 June 2026 are subject to the new regulations.
If you paid by cash or card, you can claim a refund without a receipt simply by registering your number plate. For payments made via an electronic toll collection device, you can make a claim by registering the device. No receipt is required.
If you have lost your receipt or failed to collect it at the toll booth, you can request a replacement receipt from Autostrade per l’Italia via the website www.autostrade.it at the link https://servizialcliente.autostrade.it/s/webform/ricevuta-pedaggio-sostitutiva
Yes, it is preferable to keep the receipt until you receive the refund.
If, after at least 48 hours, the journey is still not visible in the "Travel History" section, you may submit your claim by taking a picture of the receipt collected at the exit toll booth and sending it via the Muovy Cashback App or via the Cashback portal, following to the instructions.
If you use an electronic toll collection device, refunds for journeys made after 1 June 2026 will only be visible once the transaction has been processed and invoiced. Until then, even if the journey has already been made, it will not be available for calculation.
No. Refunds cannot be claimed against an Unpaid Toll Report.
F. Documentation
Depending on the option chosen to claim your refund, you may be asked to provide: personal or company details, email address, proof of identity, vehicle number plate, payment receipt or electronic toll collection service invoice (if you have registered the device) and, for company vehicles or long-term rental/leased vehicles, a combination of an assignment letter, handover report or long-term rental/lease contract. All these data are necessary so that the Motor Vehicle Registration Authority can carry out the appropriate checks on the number plate and validate it.
