Pescara, 14 January 2019. The Pescara Section Department of Autostrade per l'Italia, having taken note of the favourable opinion of the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport on the reopening of the Cerrano viaduct to heavy vehicles, has sent a prompt reply to the Department to inform it that an internal "emergency management" procedure is already in place. This procedure stems from the sensor-based monitoring system already active on the viaduct, which provides 24/7 data acquisition, transmitted by strain gauges, clinometres and fixed probes installed on the structure. The emergency plan is activated when certain warning thresholds, validated by the specialised company Speri, are exceeded. The Section Department, as requested by the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, will immediately start sharing the procedure with the local authorities concerned and will be available for any changes or additions.
In the letter, the Section Department also announced the launch of a further investigation campaign with the aim of installing the additional instruments for measuring ground movement required by the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and already indicated in the technical analysis carried out by the professionals in charge.
On the basis of the shared evidence, the Section Department will submit a new application to the Judicial Authority for the removal of the ban on heavy traffic on the viaduct, without prejudice to the other restrictions in place.
