the lane 3 (38 Km)
Work description
The expansion intervention for the A1 stretch between Orte and Roma Nord (at the junction with the Fiano Romano link road), which sees peak traffic of more than 60,000 vehicles with in excess of 15,000 lorries and buses, entailed expansion of the stretch from two to three lanes plus the hard shoulder for an overall length of approximately 38 km.
The work was completed in July 2002. The works to expand to 3 lanes of Nazzano Tunnel (337 m) have been completed in December 2007.
Local works
The expansion of Nazzano Tunnel to three lanes is particularly significant on account of the use of cutting-edge technology developed by Autostrade per l'Italia. Said expansion was a world first and allowed motorists to continue using the two lanes of the existing tunnel during execution of the works.
This solution allowed preservation of the delicate environmental balance of the adjacent Nazzano Nature Reserve, which would otherwise have been jeopardised by the construction of a new tunnel
