Network expansion

Case studies

To improve the quality and efficiency of the service provided Autostrade per l'Italia thoroughly monitors the road network and takes action to resolve critical issues. The construction of third and fourth lanes benefits motorists and respects the environment: more free-flowing traffic also means less CO2 emissions.
Autostrade per l'Italia is engaged in a major highway network expansion programme, primarily through the construction of third and fourth lanes for existing highway stretches (work on the Variante di Valico and the Gronda di Genoa are two exceptions).

Over 60 km of interventions in 2011

2011 saw the construction of over 60 km of new network to eliminate bottlenecks and increase traffic capacity. The work specifically related to:

  • the A14 between Rimini Nord and Porto S. Elpidio (completion of work on 40.3 km between Ancona Sud and Porto S. Elpidio);
  • the opening to traffic of lane 3 between Roma Nord and Settebagni (16km), of the new Castelnuovo di Porto junction and of lane 3 of the South carriageway between Scandicci and Firenze Sud;
  • the A9 Lainate-Como Grandate, with opening to traffic of the Lainate link road between the A8 and A9 highways and completion of the expansion works on approximately 6 km of highway;
  • the Variante di Valico, with completion of work on 24 km.

In accordance with the 2008 Convention, Autostrade per l'Italia has already planned a detailed series of future network expansion interventions:
