Where you are on the motorway
To use the traffic information to maximum effect, you must know your location on the motorway. Information via radio, on message panels and all other media indicates accidents, roadworks and tail-backs by using the kilometre at which the event occurred.
Every 1000 metres on the left of the motorway there is a road sign with a white background showing your location in kilometres. (*)
The green portion indicates the closest town and its distance from you.
Finding your location is also important if you need to report a breakdown or accident to rescue services or the authorities (Police, Fire Brigade, Autostrade per l'Italia, etc.), when you will be asked for your location and carriage way.
(*) Road signs in one direction carry numbers that increase e.g. 490,491,492, etc and in the opposite direction numbers that decrease e.g. 490,489,488 etc.
For more details watch out for small white road signs, low down on the left, every 100 metres, showing kilometres in numerals and hundreds of metres in Roman numerals.
