Autostrade per l’Italia and its subsidiaries are carrying out a major investment plan to develop and modernize the highway network.

Key Figures

The Plan will be implemented through 300 Macro-interventions, which will create more than 1,000 km of noise protection. The total protection surface area is approximately 4,000,000 m2 with an average height of 4.2 m. The total surface area of noise coverings is 160,000 m2.

The macro-interventions are carried out in the order defined by a national ranking created on the basis of a noise priority index that is exclusively linked to noise levels and to the exposed population.

The Ministry of the Environment, Land and Sea approved the Autostrade per l'Italia Noise Containment and Abatement Plan with decree GAB-DEC-0000034 of 11/03/2011, which was published in the Official Gazette of 04/05/2011 with the specifications and prescriptions as set out in the Memorandum of Understanding approved at the Joint Region/State Conference of 18/11/2010.

National and regional rankings, calculated according to the priority index defined by the Decree of the Ministry of the Environment of on 29 November 2000, are set out below.

As at the 2012 year-end:

  • 21 interventions  pursuant to the first five-year phase had been completed on approximately 50 km of noise barriers and coverings;
  • 25 interventions pursuant to the first five-year phase had been commenced/contracted out, for approximately 55 km of noise barriers and coverings;
  • The planning of 1 intervention had been completed on approximately 1.4 km of noise barriers and coverings, thus completing the first five-year phase.
  • The design of 10 supplementary interventions for the first five-year phase, totalling 20 km of barriers, had been completed.
