Noise pollution control / Autostrade per l'Italia commitments

Autostrade per l’Italia and its subsidiaries are carrying out a major investment plan to develop and modernize the highway network.

Autostrade per l'Italia commitments

Autostrade per l'Italia published the NOISE MAPS and ACTION PLANS online in 2008, in accordance with article 8 ("Information and public consultation") of Legislative Decree 194/05, "Implementation of directive 2002/49/EC on the determination and management of environmental noise". The comments and observations submitted by the general public by 14/07/08 were taken into account when drawing up the definitive ACTION PLANS.

Any communications received after this date are taken into account in the revised version of the Noise Map which, in line with current legislation, Autostrade per l'Italia published on its website and transmitted to the Ministry and the Regions by 30/06/2012.

Autostrade per l'Italia published the updated Action Plans on its corporate website on 20 April 2013 so that the general public could review the plans and submit their comments, opinions and responses in writing within 45 days of the date of publication.

Comments and observations submitted by the general public by 05/06/13, for the transmission to the Authorities by 18/07/2013, were taken into account when drawing up the definitive ACTION PLANS.

In addition to the Noise Maps and Action Plans, Autostrade per l'Italia also published the CONTAINMENT and NOISE CONTAINMENT and ABATEMENT PLAN (NCAP), presented in June 2007 to provide residents with more comprehensive information on the abatement interventions to be adopted.

Autostrade per l'Italia has also implemented a number of noise reduction interventions on its network, acting in advance with respect of legal requirements to improve the most critical situations.  Of particular relevance in this regard are the works completed as part of the "Genoa Pilot Project" (barriers, partial and total covers and soundproof windows), carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment, Prefecture and Municipality of Genoa. Not only did this experience, which is now nearing completion, serve to develop the most effective sound-proofing methods but also the design, calculation and noise testing procedures, which were subsequently transposed into regulations.

Some project figures are set out below:

  • 83,000 m2 of noise barriers
  • 84,000 m2 of baffles and covers
  • 434,000 m2 of sound-absorbing road surfaces.

With regard to the Autostrade per l'Italia noise abatement plan, as at the end of 2012, the figures were as follows:

  • 21 interventions  pursuant to the first five-year phase had been completed on approximately 50 km of noise barriers and coverings;
  • 25 interventions pursuant to the first five-year phase had been commenced/contracted out, for approximately 55 km of noise barriers and coverings;
  • design of 1 intervention had been completed thus completing the first five-year phase, for a total of 1.4 km of barriers.
  • the design of 10 supplementary interventions for the five-year phase had been completed, for a total of 20 km of barriers.

Lastly, in constructing the new expansion and widening works, Autostrade per l'Italia guarantees compliance with the most precautionary environmental noise limits.
