Autostrade per l’Italia is a European leader among concessionaire for the construction and management of toll highways.

Strategy

Autostrade per l'Italia's strategy fits into the broader context of the Atlantia Group and is closely connected to the group's mission: to be the leading operator of sustainable mobility, from construction to management of infrastructure networks, putting customers, the territory, the community, its own staff and care for the environment at the heart of its actions.

Improving safety levels and network fluidity

Autostrade has always been committed to improving safety parameters and motorway network fluidity levels. With an investment of over 1.6 billion Euros per year, it is the first global operator in dynamic tolling, recognised as the leader in the design and enhancement of motorway infrastructures, safety and technologies.

The activities carried out over the years in various fields have produced a significant reduction both in accident rates and in network congestion levels.

Increasing services to customers

One of Autostrade's aims is to provide a gradual increase in the degree of customer satisfaction through continuous improvement of the service offered.

The objective is achieved by acting on various levers:

  • through interventions on the infrastructure fabric, generally aimed at enhancing and modernising the network
  • through gathering reports that reach the facility dedicated to customer care
  • through optimising network maintenance and management operations aimed at redeveloping service areas

Identifying and overseeing risks

The Group believes that in order to create sustainable value and to ensure company decisions are adopted in an informed way, it is essential to carry out preliminary and continuous analysis of the nature and level of risks connected to the strategic objectives for the achievement of the company's performance.

To this end, in 2005 the Group implemented a risk management system entrusted to the Risk Management structure which is responsible for supporting the company structures in the process of identifying, assessing, managing and monitoring risks.

Risk areas connected to the strategic objectives identified by the BoD: the Business Risk Model

Financial Risk

The financial risks are mainly related to finding appropriate sources of funding, to changes in interest and exchange rates and to the maintenance of an adequate credit rating.

Regulatory risk

The Group operates in a highly regulated industry, therefore a significant part of the revenues and economic return on investments might be affected by the regulatory and legislative stability of the country in which it operates, by the legal applicability of concessions contracts and by the degree of discretion exercised by the contractual counterpart.

Compliance risk

In the performance of its activities, the Group is exposed to the risk of violations of law and regulations, nevertheless it always operates in compliance with the laws and regulations and chooses partners and sectors/countries that are compatible with its own ethical standards.

Business risk (financial)

The Group operates with the intent to minimise the exposure to the risks of interruption of the service provided, also for causes not attributable to its own management (e.g. weather, accidents, road blocks etc.), of road safety, malfunctioning of information systems (recording of tolls, information to users, etc.), or the obsolescence of the infrastructures.

Business risk (development)

The risk related to the development of the business is associated with the objectives of geographic and business diversification (favouring countries with solid growth prospects), the execution of investment plans (for which the cost-effectiveness ratio is assessed) and/or the acquisition of new infrastructures (preferring motorways with development prospects in support of light/urban traffic and "brownfield" initiatives with a low construction risk).

Assessing the social and environmental impacts

The continuous improvement of the degree of environmental compatibility of the network is one of Autostrade's strategic objectives to meet the needs of the community and territories in which it operates.

Sustainability is a universal objective for the group, inspiring Autostrade in the implementation of all of its policies.

Among the various aspects that characterise the Group's policy on Corporate Social Responsibility, particular importance is given to they take on those that impact on the community and on social and environmental aspects.

In this regard, essential operations for the successful outcome of initiatives implemented include the correct assessment of the impact of its activities on the social fabric and on the environmental aspect, the maintenance of ongoing dialogue with all stakeholders and the continuous monitoring of its own performance.

Managing critical issues and the socio-environmental repercussions

Managing a motorway network means planning its development as well as managing the operations, preventing the occurrence of critical issues and taking prompt action to remedy problems.

Optimising the relationship with the ecosystem is strategically important for Autostrade per l'Italia and results in organisational responsibility at various levels, dedicated tools and processes, as well as an ongoing relationship with various stakeholders.

The company's approach to the protection of the environment is permeated by the life cycle logic. The design phase of interventions is projected towards a continuous improvement of the degree of environmental compatibility.

Autostrade per l'Italia's focus is set on the overall management of the environmental repercussions on network operations, in which prevention accompanies corrective actions. There are multiple areas of action including noise pollution, the removal of accidental spillages of hazardous substances and the adoption of energy-saving policies.

Monitoring in three phases: construction, management and operation

The safety of workers and travellers, network efficiency, development based on the needs of communities and in respect of the environment: Autostrade per l'Italia's success is linked to the achievement of these objectives.

From the planning of operations on the motorway network, at Autostrade per l'Italia nothing is left to chance. The company is committed to discussing and planning both actions to be taken and the methods to be used with institutions, communities, workers and suppliers on a daily basis.

The environmental impact of operations on the network is monitored before, during and after the works through the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), which is also extended to the companies carrying out the works.

Workers, including those of the contractors, receive appropriate training courses on the proper conduct to be adopted in order to lower the risk of accidents.

During operations, Autostrade per l'Italia constantly monitors the fluidity and safety of traffic on the network, uses surveys to detect how quality is perceived by customers and is quick to introduce innovations that will continue to improve the quality of the service offered.

Dialogue with Institutions and Communities

Autostrade per l'Italia's ultimate goal is to work towards a safer, more accessible and eco-friendly mobility system.
To achieve this goal, ongoing dialogue with the Communities and local and national Institutions is an essential element.

When defining the development plans, as also with the planning of operations on the motorway network, Autostrade per l'Italia constantly relates both nationally and internationally with parliamentary bodies, industry authorities, government departments as well as regional and local authorities.

Autostrade per l'Italia develops and maintains an open, ongoing and transparent dialogue with these entities on various levels in which the relationships are defined, from the technical-regulatory aspects, to the activation of various initiatives, including Memoranda of Understanding for the pursuit of specific aims, rather than informative actions aimed at local communities.

The dialogue with the Institutions and the legislative monitoring are constantly supported by direct discussions with the territory and by listening to the requests from the community.

The positive effects of the activity carried out by the company on the community stem primarily from the benefits that arise indirectly from "sustainable" management of the motorway network.
Autostrade per l'Italia's attention to discussions with the community is also evident in the specific actions directly aimed at the latter, including initiatives of humanitarian, scientific, cultural, sports and social nature, pursued both independently and in collaboration with other national and international entities and bodies.

Improving the quality of life of workers

Autostrade per l'Italia pursues these company goals by giving a central role to the enhancement, development and well-being of human resources in its development strategies.

A secure job that promotes personal skills and is open to the possibility of professional development is what the company is committed to offering its workers on a daily basis.

Through the adoption of selection and recruitment procedures based on maximum transparency and respect for equal opportunities, the offer of training and professional development plans, the planning of social initiatives for employees and their families and the creation of internal communication campaigns aimed at developing a sense of ownership, Autostrade per l'Italia puts its workers at the heart of its production process, always operating in full recognition of national and international standards regarding human and labour rights.
