Payment at the exit tollgate

New signage at the motorway tollgates

Autostrade per l'Italia has ultimated standardizing of motorway signs to explain the different payment options in all motorway stations of their network, either entering or exiting the motorway. After a first phase of inquiry and experiments, involving active participation of motorway users to a market inquiry and a focus group, Autostrade per l'Italia has defined a new signage layout to achieve major directness and visibility, based on colour identification associated to the different payment options and on a standard use of colours, icons and symbols, as worked out from previous experiences led at main tollgates in the past.

A market review led to test the appraisement and understanding of the new signage shew that over 70% of motorway users choose a tollgate lane following the signs about the payment options. Clear and immediate understandable signs allow drivers arriving at the toll to chose quickly the lane corresponding to their payment option, avoiding both confusion, and slowing down of the car flow near the pay tolls and, more important than anything, help cut down the number of accidents due to sudden manoeuvring or moving from one gate lane to the other.

Entrance gate
The lanes reserved for Telepass owners are provided with new signage settled above the marquee, characterized by a yellow background sign reading "reserved Telepass owners". All the other gate lanes where tickets are issued are characterized by signs settled nearer the ground at the entrance of the lane.

Exit gate
The new signage is meant to quicker the payment, allowing users, along the 2.855 km of the Autrostrade per l'Italia network, to see and locate clearly and immediately the various payment options available at each exit gate.
The new layout includes 5 different types of signage (settled above the marquee) according to the various payment options.

payment through Telepass The yellow background stands for unambiguous drive-through automatic payment through Telepass
In addition to the Telepass icon, the sign reads "owners only" to underline that the lane is only for Telepass owners.
payment with cards: Viacard, credit cards, and Bancomat The blue colour stands unambiguously for payment with cards: Viacard, credit cards, and Bancomat. In addition to the Viacard icon the sign shows two anonymous cards to explain that a large range of cards are valid for payment (details of agreed cards, illustrated further down, is displayed on the sign down at the entrance to the lane).
payment: Viacard, Credit Card, Bancomat When in addition to the above sign, a big T above yellow background is displayed, the Telepass user knows he can use that gate too, but knows it is not an exclusive Telepass gate. The blue background means that those lanes are meant for card payment: Viacard, Credit Card, Bancomat.
cash payment When the sign background is white, it means that the lane is exclusively for cash payment. The sign shows the icon of cash with in addition the symbol of a hand, indicating the presence of a cashier.
automatic self-service cash desk In this case too, the white colour means cash payment. In the lanes bearing this type of sign, payment is made through automatic self-service cash desk (with automatic change).
The sign shows, apart from cash icon, cards icon on blue background, which means that it is possible to pay with Viacard, Credit Card and Bancomat. The card icon is at the bottom of the sign to show that that lane is not exclusively for this type of payment.

The same colours, icons and symbols which are used for the signage at the toll gates can be found on road signs meant to channel the traffic next to the gate tolls, in order to anticipate the message and help the user sorting out which lanes match the payment option chosen.
